Trap Rabbit debuts newest release: Empress

Lately Philly has been thriving with newly sprouted acts and trios, but what you don't see a whole lot of are the duos. Performing on the scene since 2015, Trap Rabbit, the Philadelphia duo of Logan Roth and Arjun Dube take the role of Keyboard player and drummer to a new level and produce progressive grooves that fit a unique soundscape influenced by jazz, hip-hop, and soul.
Their new EP, Empress, is a great display of prowess from the duo, with intricate progressive tones and beats reminiscent of soul and hip-hop genres. Immediately on the first track, R U Real, we hear the classic Fender Rhodes sound from Roth interlaced with syncopated rhythms from Dube. The track comes to a triumphant crescendo to then is brought back to calm waters. The second and title track on Empress, takes a similar form, but this time with album producer and guitarist Eric Bazilian(The Hooters) laying down some seriously shredding guitar licks to compliment the drum kit and Rhodes. Bald Girl, the third track, as well keeps the crescendo'd track form, commencing quietly with soft notes and opening up strong notes to follow. Just over half-way through the track, the gates open and the lions run...a steady and sturdy build to be concluded by soft mellow sounds of the Rhodes again to bring us back to a quiet state. The last track on the EP, Growth Spurt, includes Max Zooi on the bass clarinet adding a dynamic to the track that breaks the mold of the others, more of a roller coaster ride than a mountain climb, like the other tracks. There's one thing for sure, this duo is tightly knit and have put in the time together. Empress proves that when you take the influences of jazz, hip-hop, and soul, a unique progressive sound can develop and you'll find yourself picturing what this duo would sound like live, and you can do that tomorrow!
Friday night at Bourbon & Branch in Northern Liberties, Trap Rabbit hosts their album release party for Empress joined by local funk favorites, Darla, and DJ itsjustahmad. Tickets are $10 day of show or $8 if purchased today: https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1647343
