Big Something debuts newest release: The Otherside
Big Something fuses elements of hard rock, funk, and jam improvisation to take listeners on a journey through a myriad of musical styles. On this past Friday's latest release, The Otherside, the North Carolina-based act continues to build upon the post-apocalyptic peyote trip imagery from their last album, Tumbleweed, concluding the story of a nomad who has made it to the other side of his journey wandering through the night towards a desert sunrise. The album also showcases a different musical side of the band with heavier, more focused improvisation, and soulful collection of 8 songs. A casual song- and structure-based band, Big Something takes risks and chances with their new music, diving deep into their compositions with futuristic sounds with tracks like Sundown Nomad and Cosmic Dust. Embracing the sonic landscape, Wildfire, the second track on The Otherside, is an anthemic guitar-laced track with a strong build-up. Blissful dream-like tones coupled with a simple yet layered approach can be heard in the fourth and title track, The Otherside, leading way to the fifth track, Smoke Signals, a misty tune that seems to reference an old friend, and features a delicate and dedicated saxophone solo to flow over guitar licks. The seventh tack, Plug, is the rocker on this album...built for heavy guitar and bass riffs, it also has a horn section to fill in and compliment the vocals, and some serious shredding finger-work concludes this one. Hole, the last track on The Otherside, comes in from crescendo leading way to a busy, worker-bee sound from the band - everyone moving in unison at their own delivery and tempo, with heavy syncopated beats and cosmic tones.
Meshing rock and future groove, Big Something retain an original sound & composition style which translates over to their live show, mixing up the setlists and re-configuring how some of the jams are played. The Otherside was worked on by Grammy-nominated producer John Custer, who has produced all five of the band’s albums at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC.
