The Smashing Pumpkins at Wells Fargo Center 10/21/22
The Smashing Pumpkins continue on The Spirit of Fire US arena tour, which kicked off October 2nd in Dallas with stops through Houston, Austin, Tampa, Nashville, Atlanta, Boston, DC, in NYC at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night, and Friday night here in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center. After lighting up 2021 with the Machina tour, the band performed at Riot Fest, Asbury Park’s Sea.Hear.Now festival in 2021, and in 2022 at Beale Street Music Fest, Beach Life Festival, Oklahoma’s Rock Invasion 2 Festival, and Dayton’s Welcome to Rockville.
With rejuvenated sound and execution, the Pumpkins are slated to release their 33-track album in a three ‘act’ release on November 15, January 31st, and April 21st, titled ‘Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts', their twelfth studio release. A special edition box set featuring the album with10 additional bonus tracks will also be released in April. The Smashing Pumpkins current touring lineup includes founding members Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha alongside shredder guitarist Jeff Schroeder, with touring bassist Jack Bates and background vocalist Katie Cole.
Taking the stage early at 8:15pm, with Janes Addiction cancelling their performance for the evening due to a reported injury, the band opened the night to the Philadelphia crowd with the rock anthem, Quiet, from their 1993 breakout, sophomore album, 'Siamese Dream'. In the two-slot was Empires, from their newest upcoming release 'Atum' and favorites like Bullet With Butterfly Wings, the smash hit Today, and the Talking Heads cover, Once In a Lifetime...delivered in Pumpkins fashion, of course. The Pumpkins continued piling on more rock hits with Tonight, Tonight, Cherub Rock, 1979, Silverfuck, Disarm, and Neophyte & Harmegeddon from the newest release, closing out the show out with X.Y.U from the 1995 album 'Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness'. We saw the band deliver emotionally charged songs, old, new, and in between with dazzling graphics of stars, butterflies, geometric shapes, and cyber worlds, masterfully lit by lighting designer Luke Stratton, a Jedi on the lightboard, formally of Dopapod. Throughout the performance, Billy Corgan and James Iha traded turns riling the crowd up, and we even heard shoutouts from Corgan to Philadelphia's big game going on across the street at Citizens Bank Park, letting us know that Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber is a Pumpkins fan. The band continues on through the mid-western US, Canada and finally the west coast. Check out photos from the set and more of the tour dates below.
