Phish returns to Madison Square Garden for their annual
New Years Run 12/28-31
by Lou Cervantes
-Industry Night-
I work weekends and holidays. That's part of being in the industry. It has also been nothing but bad luck this year concerning opportunities to see Phish. Not even much more than a highlight or two via webcast rip and constantly having 2016 on repeat through the Phish app on my IPAD plugged into my car via an aux cable. Favorite show? Atlanta, Vegas, and Dick's Night Ones. When an opportunity to finally see a show this year arose I naturally chose the first night of the four night New Year's Run which starts tonight in NYC at Madison Square Garden.
A perfect show for a guy like me who has not witnessed any live Phish at all this year. It's one of the few nights of the year where they could come out and play anything. I've been constantly trying to write some type of dream setlist in my head since the tickets were in hand but it's damn near impossible to dream when it comes to the first night of the Garden. Most of my stat junkie 9-5 friends are skipping tonight and attending the next 3 nights out of the uncertainty behind what Phish songs we will get when they hit the stage early this evening. All I can do is simply ponder along with them as we get ready for what is sure to be another great Phish run at the Garden.

What they want...
What my buddy the Tooth Specialist who is going to the next 3 nights wants: a jammed version of 'More'
What my brother wants: Famous Amadeus pizza (a New Year's Run tradition originally belonging to the Biscuits and dating back over 10 years)
What my friend seeing the show with me tonight wants: a ragin Bowie
What his wife attending New Year's Eve with him wants: a Bowie cover
What my stat-junkie friend who take song bets a half hour before the show wants: to win his pool
What 215alex wants: a magical shot of the band which will be shared on ig to the masses
What someone that just discovered Phish and saw them for the first time this Fall Tour wants: finally seeing a YEM or a Reba live
What someone that's been seeing this band for over 20 years wants: finally seeing a YEM or Reba live
What the band wants: the fans' delight
What the staff of the Garden wants: something upbeat and dance-y
What New York wants: a Stanley Cup
What the jamband community wants: a crunchy headline
And what I want: to finally see the Vermont quartet take the stage this year!
Looking forward to seeing everybody get down tonight at the show. It's a bummer I can't make it any of the other nights but I also feel rather honored for the unpredictability of the 28th is perfectly suited as 'the one show' guys like me should never miss. May the type-2 20 plus minute second set jams be with you!
