The 2019 Beardfest in Hammonton, NJ at Paradise Lake Campground 6/13-6/16
A serene weekend in Hammonton, NJ for the 2019 Beardfest with loads of great music, workshops, food, family and friends on the beautiful beachfront of Paradise Lake in Wharton State Park. We had the chance to spend two days on site taking it all in through the lens, catching the colors, smiles, and the music. Friday at Paradise Lake campground saw a special improv set from Edenspore to start the day off followed by the soulful sounds of Sonni Shine, Lady Moon & The Eclipse, Cousin Earth, Out of the Beardspace side-project, Pansong, the hard-hitting progressive grooves from Gnarbot, Grimace Federation, West Philly Orchestra, JoJo Mayer's Nerve trio, funky Beach Stage headliners, Ghost-Note, and Forest Stage headliners, Minka, for a wild party in the woods to close the night out.
The music continued Saturday morning on the Beach Stage at 11am with a light folk set from Philly-based songwriter, Rachel Andie, followed by a rock-bluegrass set from the quartet of Hepner's Rebellion. A bit later the young group of Zachademy performed some fun covers leading to a funky late afternoon set from Cory Frye and The Main Squeeze, which blew the crowd away. Over on the Forest Stage we caught the strange and earthy Miss Cantaloupe, a set of music that very much resembled a play of garden fairies attempting to save the world from humans. Later we saw a set from the reggae Beatles septet, Yellow Dumbarine, playing the Beatles' favorites reggae style, of course we sang along. Later came NYC songwriter Becca Stevens followed by an always powerful set from our hosts, Out of the Beardspace, and a glowing, raucous party with Too Many Zooz to close out the Forest stage for the weekend. Headlining the beach stage was the trio of The New Deal, delivering a hard-hitting dance party of a set to a beach full of happy campers followed by the ambient psychedelic, looping sounds of Tim Motzer on guitar to close out the weekend of music.
Throughout the weekend one could find various workshops like Exploring Guitar Effects with Zach LoPresti & Jonathan Colman, Tai Chi & Qigong Healing, Energy Yoga, Improv Comedy, Flow Arts, Poi and Freedom, Yoga for youth and kids, primitive life skills, Apitherapy, Holistic techniques, World drumming workshop, wire wrapping, Intro to Crochet, and even Festie Photography 101. There's something for everyone at Beardfest, and while the festival is mainly centered around fantastic music, the theme of Beardfest is togetherness, friendship, family, giving back, and protecting this spinning ball we live on the best of our abilities.
