Particle releases new LP and is charged up to play The Foundry at Fillmore 10/25
by Brian Cole
Particle's current tour supporting their long awaited new album (14 years in the making!), aptly named Accelerator, is coming to The Foundry at Fillmore on 10/25 joined by lespecial, so get on up and support one of jamtronica's founding fathers and his crackadelic band. Keyboardist Steve Molitz has ensconced himself in a new generation of co-conspirators who torch their rigs and keep the crowd energy juiced-fists are pumped, the roof gets raised, Steve goes off on flights of synthetic freak out fantasy that modulate wildly, it all evokes the glory of the one and only Purple Woo, Bernie Worrell (RIP).
The sets are a mix of primarily new material with a dose of classics and a sprinkle of choice covers. The presser for Accelerator hinted at a band focused on next level visuals and the lights, and new video screens do not disappoint - extra-curriculars get richly rewarded. The new album achieves the proper balance of honoring the original band’s sound while embracing a more funky dance groove devoid of any untz, wiki-wiki and wobble. The songwriting on Accelerator is fiercely democratic with every member chipping in equally while at the same time maintaining a solid cohesion and flow throughout. Hints of Gilmouresque soaring leads give the middle segment a Floydian grace. Themes of an otherwordly sci-fi dystopia flow through both the music and visuals, it’s all reminiscent of Kid A and a deep space trip into the Matrix. Lyrics are minimalistic and veer into patches of sparse disembodied bleets with heavily processed vocorder lines that evoke Daft Punk-this heavy processing gets somewhat repetitive and is the only ding on an overall triumphant return to form. Particle Accelerator spits protons, neutrons and quarks-grade 9.2. The total package of the show is bound to be more than the Foundry deserves, an embarrassment of riches for Philly’s psychonauts.
