Not Blood Paint at Kung Fu Necktie - Philadelphia 6/24
King's of their domain, Not Blood Paint visited Kung Fu Necktie Friday night under the El and what I thought would be a lightly populated show turned into a pack room of 'believers' who came to experience what is quite a foursome of George Frye, Mark Jaynes, Seth Miller and Joe Stratton. Several fans in the audience were familiar with these tunes, Brooklynites visiting with the band or just fans in general. I got an immediate raw rock feel with a punk flare that seemed twist around touching other genres like jazz and lounge music. The band has a stage presence unlike many other bands around, donning makeup and robes with princely wears, necklaces and glitter. If you're trying to put an exact label on the genre of Not Blood Paint, good luck!
From sounds of Zappa, LCD Soundsytem, Devo, Primus and Tool, trying to attach a label for their genre ends in a maze. After seeing these gents in person I realized how 'artfully' they do indeed move from a jazzy/soul vibe to a metallic and almost punky sound...parachuting back into soft grooves. Lots of strength in the music also, showing off power chords and intricate melodies on guitar and bass with some impressive beats. One thing that always attracts and impresses me is raw musical talent and passion. The band plays next at House of YES in New York city.
Not Blood Paint's most recent album Believing is Believing dropped last week on 6/17 and is now available everywhere. You can give a listen to some of the tracks here: https://soundcloud.com/notbloodpaint
