Everyone Orchestra joined by the original Dopapod Trio
Words & Photos: Alex Buschiazzo
Everyone Orchestra is the traveling troupe of minstrels with a rotating cast led by Matt Butler, who commands the crew in a tophat and coat in snazzy fashion, and chooses his footwear wisely, as he keeps active during the performance giving cues and developing the assembled musicians into a groove that jams. The motto of Everyone Orchestra is 'Plan To Improvise', because this is basically what the entire concert performance is exactly. Hand-picked members of national jam & funk acts, Eli Winderman of Dopapod on Keys, Jeremy Salken of Big Gigantic on drums, bassist Taylor Shell and Saxman/ vocalist Josh Schwartz of Turkuaz, with axe slingers Jackie Greene and Cris Jacobs shredding it up, later joined by Dopapod's Rob Compa....yes, three highly skilled guitar players on stage. Teeming with talent and non-stop improv jams brought all walks of fans out, many quite familiar with the faces on stage. Ardmore is always a jam-friendly spot so you can expect to see just about each one of them coming through there again at some point, and most certainly Everyone Orchestra when they return with a new cast.
Supporting the Everyone Orchestra last night, and mixing in with them, the original Dopapod lineup of just three, Eli Winderman, Turkuaz's Michelangelo Carubba, and Rob Compa. A highly anticipated set for some since Dopapod is currently taking the year off from touring, this would be the first time Compa and Winderman have performed any music from their catalog this year, as Winderman keeps busy with local trio Octave Cat lately and Compa making various local appearances in the area sitting in with many great acts like The Royal Noise and others. Jazzy grooves and old songs of yesteryear were delivered, with previously played versions of songs, and even a John Mayer cover, Vultures. Well received from the crowd, it was no surprise that I had very little room on the dance floor, as the creativity of this trio spilled out on stage the feet on the dance-floor kicked up. Keep an eye out for more projects and fun things from these three. Coming up in May, a developing residency of FREE performance at Northbowl in Northern Liberties titled Funk N' Jam hosted by Winderman will surely bring a mix of Philly talent. The first date is scheduled for May 6th at Northbowl, 909 N. 2nd Street.
