Philadelphia Funk-Fusion Trio Expansion Project release debut album, Conscious Tortoise

Philadelphia has certainly seen a recent spike in trio acts over the past few years with some great creativity. Whether it be rock, funk, jazz, jam, or folk, one trio that stands out of the crowd is Expansion Project, who grew out of the passion that longtime friends Anthony Tilotta and Matthew Silva had for creating and playing music. Realizing the need for percussion in this keyboard/bass duo, Tilotta & Silva went in search of a drummer, which ended in 2016 when they met Zamere Williams, and the dream became a reality where an immediate bond was formed. The chemistry both in and out of the studio was as if they had been jamming together for years, resulting in this inseparable trio making music together ever since, and have produced a solid sound on their debut release.
After putting in almost a full year of work, Expansion Project has released their self-produced freshmen LP recently in mid-October of this year, titled Conscious Tortoise, mixed by Grammy award winning engineer and producer Phil Nicolo, which takes listeners on a jazz-funk infused ride through a sonic landscape. Conscious Tortoise features strong neo-funk bass lines throughout the album from Anthony Tilotta, coupled with a prominent and crystal-clear grand piano and including the polarity of synth sounds from keyboardist Matthew Silva in songs like Biadazz, Roloway, and 3G. Drummer Zamere Williams proves to be a great asset as the 3rd member of EP with pronounced phrasing and creative beats graciously filling in the sound on the LP. Although it may appear to be a 4-5 piece band to the native ear, Conscious Tortoise is a testament in trio sound and the space it fills by its three members who push the boundaries of jazz and funk.
