Guideline: Shooting for 215music
Arrive early:
Showing up late is asking for trouble, if there is no photo pit, and doors are 8pm, be in line at 7:45 or if you’re allowed early entry, great. Without a photo pit, you want that spot by the stage!
From finding a parking spot to getting settled, having your gear ready to rock, 20-30mins isn’t a bad idea ever. Start close at the stage and work back, then from above and wide out. If there is an opener feel free to shoot that act too, but I will let you know if its preferred to capture all acts or this is a 1-band assignment not focusing on the opener at all. Usually opening bands in Philly are the local bands so try not to ignore them!
15-20 photos at least -mix it up
1-2 of each individual band members (close – very close)
4-6 of full band on stage, different angles.
2-3 Photos from upstairs (if possible)
2-3 wide room photos, showing the entire room and the action going on.
1-2 Band Bow/Thank You shot (if possible)
Camera settings:
Shoot in RAW – Indoors: ISO 3200-12,800 depending on your lenses (12,800 can work but you’ll possibly see some grain)
Shutter speed: Never below 1/40 or you’ll see blur, especially if light is low
If light is low, you’ll want to be at your lowest Fstop and highest ISO without straining the image
Editing:
Lightroom - Export to JPG in a folder, keep files smaller than 15mb (we aren’t printing)
make sure the photos are LIT but not straining/grainy…remember, the artist may end up sharing/using this photo so keep this in the back of your mind all the time! If you’re using Lightroom.
Once the photos are delivered to me I’ll apply the 215music watermark and share to the website and socials.
Photo turn around:
48 hours max please – these photos get used in an ‘about last night’ post which I publish usually the next morning if possible, and as a small publication its important for us to be first out with the content. After 48 hours or past Monday morning, its old news!
ALSO: if you are able to get me 1 or 2 shots from the event WHILE you are there this would be great. A decent phone shot or one from the camera if you can so it can be shared out in real time on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram, whats happening NOW and give notice that a gallery is to follow. If you currently aren’t able to access or get photos off of your card in the field on to a phone, so that I can be shared, ask me about that and I can show you how.
Black and whites?
Are fine but let’s limit to 2-3 unless it’s a totally red/purple room- Vibrant and contrasting colors please.
Examples:
of what I’m looking for with the shots: Close ups, full band, individual band members, wide stage shots, behind the stage, far-wide room shots, artful stage and focus shooting

No Pass/NO SLR? No problem
Invest in a decent point and shoot with a good zoom (20-40x) to also keep in your bag – I use a Nikon L840 with a 40x zoom, not the greatest camera but gets it DONE.
