After ten years of Highly Suspect’s debut album, Mister Asylum, the Grammy-nominated rock band brought their anniversary tour to Philly, the second night of the ten-show run. Despite the freezing temperature on a Thursday night, a line of concertgoers snaked down the street, all bundled and smiling, ready to hear Mister Asylum played in its entirety. The Nashville-based band Flight Attendant opened the evening with an energetic and hard-hitting set of rock-pop tracks that got the crowd going. Their stage presence was a delight to see, as well as the genuine gratitude they demonstrated for the opportunity to play to a new audience.
As 9:30 rolled around, the much-anticipated main act of the night stepped into the limelight. Separated by two parts with a brief intermission, the show kicked off with the title track and “Lost.” The audience was loose, but it wasn’t until “Bath Salts” ripped through the venue that the crowd surfing began, and there was a lot of it. And then Johnny, the frontman of Highly, directed the crowd into a moshing frenzy, the crowd separated, and then clashed together with the music. I must say that the fanbase was one of the most down-to-earth crowds I’ve encountered. While the music was wild, the people had a lighthearted energy to them, checking on those around them, making sure they were safe and having a good time. Having never seen Highly Suspect in a live setting until last night, I can say with certainty that they are a band that you must experience live. The energy is infectious, and the music is primal.
