Atlanta Punk Crew, Upchuck, Ready to Drop New Album - Coming to Philly's First Unitarian Church October 20th
Atlanta five-piece punk band, Upchuck, is making their way north come see us in late October at the First Unitarian Church in center city. Their new album I’m Nice Now, produced by Ty Segall, drops on Oct 3, and the band will play Philly on Oct 20 at First Unitarian Church. The band has performed with acts like Faye Webster (who's called them her favorite band), Amyl and the Sniffers, and OSEES. Early singles like “Freaky” and “Facecard” won support from the likes of Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins, who both played tracks on their radio shows, as well as press attention for their “die-hard attitude” (Vogue) and “lightning-hot bursts of energy” (The Fader). Drawing on KT's lived experience as a Black woman and drummer Chris Salado's as a Latin American, the band channels their identities into a sharp critique of systemic oppression on I'm Nice Now. Their 2022 album, Sense Yourself, gained upchuck a cult following in their Atlanta hometown, and in 2023 they released their sophomore album, Bite the Hand That Feeds. The record dialed up the crunch and fuzz, melding the band's punk origins with a primitive garage rock feel. On their latest single "Tired," for example, lead singer KT confronts the relentless grind of injustice: "How many times I gotta tell 'em that our pockets cryin'?... How many people you gon' lie to and say you're not lyin'?" Her delivery is searing: "It feels right scaring you." While most of the album is in English, Salado adds Spanish verses on tracks like "Plastic" and "Un Momento."
