On Sunday night, dedicated patrons lined the narrow halls of Milkboy, elbow to elbow, awaiting entry to see the St. Louis, Missouri-based group, The Band Feel. The four-piece band has garnered a steady following over the past two years, supporting The Black Crowes this summer and playing festivals nationwide. With a reputation for an unforgettable live experience, The Band Feel has been taking on the rock music scene with pure, unadulterated charisma and emotionally resonant art. And it was on full display last night in that tiny upstairs venue on Chestnut St. in the city of brotherly love.
Playing alongside The Band Feel for their Into The Sun Tour was the Nashville band The Thing With Feathers, who kicked off the night with a nine-song set of alt-rock indie tunes and a high-flying energy that kept the audience's attention, earning loud applause and cheers throughout.
Slightly before 9 o’clock, the main act took to the stage for nearly two hours, and they earned every minute. With songs like “Hands in my Pocket,” “Goodbye Virginia,” “In the Garden,” and two fantastic renditions of a Bill Withers song, “Use Me,” and The Beatles' “A Little Help from My Friends,” The Band Feel crafted a musical journey that ebbed and flowed seamlessly from teeth-nashing guitar solos to heartfelt lyrical poetry. There was a constant groove, a rhythm that rolled like a train, keeping the people moving. Each member had their moment to shine as they broke down sections into extended jams and bluesy rock solos that transfixed everyone in attendance. They did not simply play rock ‘n’ roll but harnessed it and reworked the old into something reinvigorated.
