Tei Shi is the artistic moniker of Valerie Teicher Barbosa, a Colombian-Canadian singer, songwriter, and producer whose work blends indie pop, alternative R&B, and art pop with bilingual flair and emotional depth. Born in Buenos Aires and raised between Bogotá and Vancouver, she now operates independently out of Los Angeles, crafting music that’s as introspective as it is sonically daring. Tei Shi's latest album released in August, Make believe I make believe, weaves dreamy pop and sharp lyricism into something both intimate and cinematic, while digging deeper into themes of self-discovery and resilience.
Across her catalog, she’s built a reputation for blending vulnerability with empowerment, moving effortlessly from glossy R&B textures to left-of-center pop gems and LIVE...she’s the total package, empowered, badass, magnetic, glam, and full of vision and raw talent. In 2013, her first EP, Saudade, introduced her ethereal vocal layering and minimalist production. The 2015 follow-up, Verde, included the breakout track, 'Bassically', which amassed over 21 million Spotify streams and set the tone for her debut album Crawl Space, released in 2017. Her 2024 album, Valerie, marked a full-circle moment, blending early pandemic compositions with later empowerment anthems. Out on her current North American tour, she'll be making a stop in Philly on October 20th at Milkboy joined by Marem Ladson, grab tickets here.
"Tei Shi remains untethered to a genre, ebbing and flowing between dream-pop, indie folk and shoegaze.” - DE LOS, LOS ANGELES TIMES
"[Make believe I make believe] captures an essence that mixes dream-pop and acoustic folk with a dembow flair. Her bilingual lyrics will pull you in closer whether they find you in the throes of a sweaty dancefloor or through your headphones.” - OFFICE
"sounds like the music really chic luxury brand commercials would've played at the cusp of the 2000s – and that's a compliment" - NYLON
"Tei Shi is undeniably establishing herself...so get on her wave now" - CONSEQUENCE
