Philly Band Proper Shapes Set to Release Debut LP, Performing at the Fringe Bar in Old City, Friday 11/22
This Friday, November 22nd, Proper Shapes will host a rockin’ celebration to mark the release of their LP by the same name. Music will begin at 8:30p at Fringe Bar in the Old City District in Philly, and will feature a late set by funky bovine friends Red Meat Conspiracy. The show is FREE to the public!
January 2019 saw the release of Nipper the Band’s debut EP and triumphant performance at Beardfest. Buoyed by this momentum, the group returned to the studio to record their more recent work and explore further opportunities, including the addition of bassist Erich Heinzel. Then 2020 happened. The resulting pause, as disheartening as it was, forced a regrouping and reevaluation which ultimately led to a name change to Proper Shapes. Guitarist and producer Jeffrey Glenn began an internship at the Gradwell House, a studio in nearby Haddon Heights, New Jersey, putting the knowledge and access he gained thereby to good use in developing what would become his band’s debut LP. The bulk of basic tracks were recorded with Grammy-nominated house engineer Matt Weber (Sweet Pill, Adam Blackstone), and the album was mastered by platinum-certified Grammy nominated mastering engineer Ryan Schwabe (Paul Russell, Oneohtrix Point Never).

The album displays the growth of the band as arrangers and as performers. The songs, five from keyboardist Paul LoPresti and three from drummer Chris Sannino, offer a wide range of mood and style. The group’s mix of classical background and pop sensibility yield a fresh blend of theatrical singer-songwriter driven art rock. In addition to the core quartet, Proper Shapes features contributions from Philly’s vibrant musical community, including cellist Bexx Rosenbloom, trombonist Connor Przybyszewski, mandolinist Patrick Duffy (Ryan Coleman), trumpeters Andrew Esch and Vince Tampio, and saxophonists Mike Labombard (Odyssey Lab) and Andrew Long.
