Garden State Live! a new monthly concert series, which aims to showcase the very best musical artists within the southern and central areas of Jersey, kicked off last night with a smash at Sound Waves at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City, in partnership with Prudential North to Shore Festival. Opening the evening was the South Jersey-based trio Isn’t It Always, who played with a blend of pop-rock and vocals that evoked the 2000s emo craze, but with a fresh modern flair. With the music pumping and a diverse crowd ranging from elders to young kids, it was time for Low Cut Connie to do what Low Cut Connie does best…put on a show. Full stop.
Founded and fronted by Adam Weiner, Low Cut Connie transported the audience with pure rock and roll and a charismatic presence. Center stage was Nellie, Weiner’s carved-up piano that resounded and wailed like no other. The energy that Weiner brings on stage has been discussed and written about since the band's inception, and rightfully so. Weiner employs every ounce of fuel in his system, it seems, banging out songs like “Dirty Water” and “Whips and Chains” with wild abandon; I’m surprised the piano keys didn’t suddenly catch fire. While the band made a raunchy, brain-rattling spectacle, it was joyfully balanced with a sincerity and heart that is rare.
Having made recent headlines for a show in Wilkes-Barre canceled by the organizers, claiming the band was ‘too political’ (the city now inviting Adam Weiner to perform a solo concert on September 6th), Low Cut Connie unapologetically demonstrated last night that the pillar of camaraderie and unity that is fundamental to the band has remained unfazed. Weiner talked with the crowd, making his way into the audience multiple times during the show, embracing everyone he passed, holding hands, and dancing his way back to the stage. The frontman made it a point to state that the two words he will never stop voicing are “diversity” and “inclusion.” Although Weiner is the only constant member with musicians freely flowing in and out of the group, it proves that Low Cut Connie is not just one man, but an ever-evolving community, a sanctuary, where all people are welcome to celebrate their love for the music and their shared humanity.
The tour continues for Low Cut Connie with dates set for the remaining summer season and into October. For more info and to check out their new single “LIVIN in the USA,” click here.
