Foxy Shazam brought on a night of raunchy, theatrical rock n ’ roll at Philly’s Underground Arts while on the last leg of their Rockin’ Rolla Coast Tour, covering over twenty cities across the country. With a densely populated crowd sufficiently warmed up by the New Jersey mathcore band, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, and captivated by Coney Island’s Hot Fix Side Show, Foxy Shazam tumbled into the limelight to be greeted by a more than eager audience. Consisting of frontman Eric Nally, Sky White (keys), Alex Nauth (horns/vocals), Devin Williams (guitar), Existential Youth (bass), Teddy Aitkins (drums), and the band slathered the stage with wild over-the-top antics, each member giving all their energy and more to the performance.
Well-known, high-energy songs like “Unstoppable” and “Holy Touch” compelled you to dance and sing along, as well as their new tracks from their latest album Animality Opera, “Rhumbatorium” and “Pink Sky.” White’s playing on the keys added delightful melodic ear-nuggets throughout the set, and I can say it was the first time I saw someone crowd surf with a keyboard. Nauth and Existential Youth brought gallons of chaos, but grounded in musicianship, the entire time, along with Aitkins’ drumming that drove a steady, thunderous beat. Nally’s vocals soared, robust and potent, with incredible range, tying the band together. Foxy Shazam will finish out their tour with two final shows in Millersville, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
